Hilary Duff is coming clean about her journey with body image and health.
The How I Met Your Father star went all out for the May/June issue of Women’s Health, posing nude on the magazine’s cover. In the interview published Tuesday, Duff opened up about how a career in the spotlight has inevitably taken its toll on her body image.
« Because of my career, I can’t help but say, ‘I’m in front of the camera and actresses are skinny,' » Duff said, adding that she struggled with an eating disorder when she was 17. « It was horrific, » Duff recalled.
But the 34-year-old actress said the empowerment she now feels with her body inspired her to pose nude, although she does get some help with it.
« I’m proud of my body. I’m proud that he produced three children for me, » said Duff. “I have arrived at a place where I can be peaceful with the changes my body has been through. I also want people to know that there was a makeup artist who made my whole body glow and someone put me in the most flattering position. »
Britney Spears’ nude Instagram photos spark concern. But they can be a form of empowerment, experts say.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday, she went on to speak about the « scary » moment of vulnerability.
« I really like doing things that I’m a little bit uncomfortable with, and that was obviously it, » Duff said.
She added, « I’m never the person to drive around my house naked, so it was scary, and then that day it was an all-female set, and that was very…everyone was just there and cheering me on, I feel. » me great and beautiful. I’m so happy I did.
Duff shared the cover with fans on Instagram on May 10, and similarly spoke about her fears of baring it all.
« I felt strong and beautiful and laughed a lot while striking some of these poses without my high waisted mom jeans and plus size clothes I usually wear, » Duff captioned the post.
Duff, who has three children – Luca, 10, Banks, 3, and Mae, 2 – said motherhood has played a role in her evolving body image.
« I didn’t even know if I was going to have the opportunity to have another kid, » Duff said of the impact of daughter Banks after her divorce from Mike Comrie. « So, being a mom again… was a whole mix of things — settling down and realizing that I’m powerful and talented and smart. All mental things.”

Duff also said that mental health is an important aspect of her well-being, adding that therapy has become as well crucial to get in shape « to look your best ».
« We get facials and botox and our hair done and highlights and eyebrows and lash lifts and all that (stuff), » Duff said. « But I want to work on the inside. »
Duff has even spoken to son Luca about the positive benefits of therapy if he’s ever interested.
« He was like, ‘I don’t need a therapist!’ « Duff recalled Lucas’ reaction. « I said, ‘No, no, no, I didn’t say you needed a therapist. But I love my therapist and I always feel better when I go because I can say, what I want and I don’t feel judged.’ Everyone needs that. »
